What is a passing TB test result? ›

The test is "negative" if there is no bump (or only a very small bump) at the spot where the fluid was injected. A negative TB skin test usually means that you don't have TB. In some situations, you may need to have another TB skin test later.

If you have an Mtb infection, the skin around the injection site should start to swell and harden within 48 to 72 hours . This bump, or induration, may also change color. But the induration's size, not the color, will determine your results. An induration of less than 5 millimeters (mm) is a negative result.

An abnormal (positive) result means you have been infected with the bacteria that cause TB. You may need treatment to lower the risk of the disease coming back (reactivation of the disease). A positive skin test does not mean that a person has active TB. More tests must be done to check whether there is active disease.

You must come back to our office 48 to 72 hours after your TB skin test is placed to have it read by a nurse. If you are unable to return within 72 hours during our clinic hours, the test will be invalid. You will have to pay again to be retested. How much does a TB test cost?

Redness alone at the skin test site usually means you haven't been infected with TB bacteria. A firm red bump may mean you have been infected with TB bacteria at some time. The size of the firm bump (not the red area) is measured 2 to 3 days after the test to find out the result.

An induration of 15 or more millimeters is considered positive in: People with no known risk factors for TB.

In a healthy person whose immune system is normal, induration greater than or equal to 15 mm is considered a positive skin test. If blisters are present (vesiculation), the test is also considered positive. In some groups of people, the test is considered positive if induration less than 15 mm is present.

After the test, you should avoid using bandages, putting on lotion, or scratching the test area because it may affect the results. You can wash the area with water, but do not wipe or scrub. If the area itches, put an ice cube or cold cloth on it.

It does not mean you have an active TB infection. The test may be seen as positive if the skin where you were injected is hard, raised, red, and swollen. But redness alone is not considered a positive test result. In many cases, a healthy immune system will surround the TB bacteria soon after you are infected.

A measurement of 0 mm or a measurement below the defined cut point for each category is considered negative. * For employees who are otherwise at low risk for TB and who are tested as part of an infection control screening program at the start of employment, a reaction of ≥ 15 mm is considered positive.

Once you have your second visit with your healthcare provider, they'll be able to tell you if your skin's reaction indicates that you may or may not have a TB infection. In most cases, you should get the results of your TB blood test within one to two days, though it could take longer.

A negative test result for TB infection means inactive TB or active TB disease is unlikely, but your health care provider may do more tests, especially if: You have symptoms of active TB disease, like coughing, chest pain, fever, weight loss, or tiredness. You can do your normal activities after your skin test, including washing your arm. It may cause swelling, itching or tenderness at the site of injection, which usually disappears within a week.
